The M-M Worship Style

Sunday, November 27th, 2005

This morning for class, the Worship class and the College class combined to watch a video featuring Jeff Walling and his son Taylor. The lesson was titled “Can Two Generations Worship Together?”. Unfortunately, it was sort of a bad time to choose that weekend as the time to watch it with the College class as most of the College group was still gone. If I were Todd, I would see about getting it from Anthony and showing it on a Sunday night. Its was just a little over 45 minutes long, but by no means boring.

They start out by describing two worship services that they both went to… I bet I don’t even have to describe it to you. You can probably already imagine the two services that were described. And yes, one would describe one of the services as boring and the other would describe the other service as just loud. At Laurel, I would hardly say our worship could be described as loud and over-the-top. After some talk about conflicts going on in our Churches (or should that be a little c?), they presented four ways in which churches are dealing with it.

The first was segregation. We, to an extent, do this at Laurel. For example, Children’s Worship for 2 year olds - K and now the new Bible Basics for 1st-3rd graders. What we are saying is that they are too young to get much out of what is going on in Big People’s Church so we send them out. Well some churches have said that this should apply to the teenagers and college students who want to worship in a more contemporary fashion. We don’t exactly do this with what we call Early Service and Late Service, but its borderline.

I don’t remember what the bullet for the second item was, but its pretty easy to describe. It was a worship style that reflects the worship style of the shepherds. The worship is going to be like what those in power prefer. I wouldn’t say that this is what we have at Laurel simply for the reason that form what I’ve picked up, they Elders collectively don’t prefer one style. Each individual may have a preference and for some those preferences may be similar, but they are certainly areas where they don’t all agree on.

The third style was the Blended Worship approach (also called the M-M style). This is what we try to do at Laurel. Currently we have been sticking with about 60% hymns and 40% praise. Now your probably thinking to yourself: “Besides Copyright Year, what is the difference between a praise song and a hymn?” To which I would like to respond, “Do you think God cares?”

The fourth style was called Separate. This is probably the worst of the four ways. A healthy way of doing Separate is to do a church plant. This would be starting a church in an area that a church is really needed. However, this being the south and in the Bible Belt, they are very few areas that are like that… But if we are going to take this to heart and apply it to our situation in Knoxville, Knoxville does seem to have the problem of not enough churches. A less healthy way of doing Separate is to do just that. Start a new church just because you didn’t get along with the old church. This happened a couple of times to the Church I went to when I was in High School. For some of y’all its gonna be hard to really relate to what it does to a community because you’ve never lived in a small town.

The four styles were all Jeff take on things. Taylor had a much simpler take on it. Head and Heart. The older generations wants a service where they feel something is learned. They want to use there heads. The younger generations want to experience a more heartfelt worship.

OK, this post is getting somewhat long and if I go into Post-Modernism, it could get really long. So I’ll just stop here and leave you with the meaning of M-M. It is mutually miserable. I think that’s apt.

The Iron Bowl.... WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!!!!
Alabama 18, Auburn 28… WAR EAGLE!!!!

Well thanks to Nancy Prosser again, I got to go to a UT game… and see them lose. This time it was to Vanderbilt. Well at least by the time I got home and Volunteer TV switched over their coverage to the Auburn/Alabama game, the score was 14-0 Auburn and they were fixing to score another touchdown. I’m glad I got to see at least one good game today!

Challengepoint, Narnia, and Other Randomness

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

So this weekend was a good weekend for our youth group. We had Challengepoint due the retreat. I was formally a Challengepoint Pointman, so it was good for me to really see just how Challengepoint works. In the past, all I could see was whether the group was coming together or not. I never really saw where they were coming from. I know where our group was coming from though, so it was pretty amazing. I heard several people say it was the best retreat ever. I went as a van driver and chaperon for the Junior High boys. They were very well behaved. I think there is one person that changes the dynamic of the group and they become rowdy when he’s around, but he wasn’t at the retreat.

With The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie fixing to come out, I’ve started to reread the Chronicles of Narnia books. If you read them over as a kid, I highly recommend that you reread them now as an adult. There sure is a lot of symbolism that can be missed as a kid.

And now for the other randomness… We should all be congratulating Zach. Only Zach can tell you why we should be congratulating him. Also, a thank you to Chad for sharing with us why Zach should be congratulated. Also, when is it gonna finally get cold and stay cold.

Neighborhood Bike Ride

Saturday, November 5th, 2005

Well today was the day of the Neighborhood Bike Ride that I referred to back on post #150. “But wait a second Cuff Daddy, hadn’t you said something about going backpacking this weekend?” To which I would have to reply as “Yeah, I did.” As to which you might say, “So what’s the deal?”

Well about Wednesday night I realized that I can’t spend all weekend having fun. I’m gonna have to set aside some time to work on worship stuff for Sunday night, etc. Also, I had forgotten that I had signed up to eat dinner on Friday night as part of the Laurel/CSC dinners. I didn’t even know where I was going until Thursday night when I got an email from Dave and Jen Smith with directions to their house. Also joining us for the evening was Sheridan Davis, and Dan and Sarah Watkins. It was a lot of fun. The first part after dinner was just sitting around listening to The Beatles on 33 1/3 RPMs and being entertained by their kids. Dan and Sarah left when it was time for the kids to go to bed. After they were asleep, Dave, Jen, Sheridan and I played Rummikub. Dave won the first game and I won the second and third games. Truth be told, Sheridan could have won the third game if she would have seen that after rearranging 7 different melds, she could play her last remaining tile. Anyways, when I got home I was talking to Jon and it turns out he told Wendy Smith (the house he went to) about the bike ride. Her and one of her friends had planned to go to Cades Cove, but they decided they would stay local instead.

So this morning, I got out on my bike and biked over to Market Square. After registering, I ran into Wendy and her friend Jennifer. We got to talking and wondered if we would see Greg Bell. 3 minutes later, Greg and his whole family show up. They had thought they saw me riding down Broadway, so that just sealed the deal. The ride was a real pleasant ride. At about mile 2.64, I decided that I had enough of the slow pace and wanted to book it some. So I kicked it up a little until the rest stop at Ijams Nature Center (mile 6.04). I chilled there for a while and waited for Wendy and Jennifer. As we were leaving, the Bells where just arriving. So we rode back (near the head of the pack) to Market Square. There the had pizza waiting for us. It wasn’t the crappy kind like Papa John’s or Dominoes, it was from the Tomato Head. Now here’s something for all you folks to keep in mind. Before you get in line, you should remove your gloves if you still have them on. I was about to remove him when one of the guys was like, “Hey remove those gloves! You don’t want nasty gloves all over your food.” Well my intent was originally to remove them and use some hand sanitizer, but since my hands obviously aren’t nasty (just my gloves are) I didn’t. I didn’t see too many other people going to wash their hands either, so I just hope I don’t get sick in the next few days because I didn’t wash my hands.
